How does a Microschool Work?

A Micro-School is often a group of like-minded families that choose to come together to achieve their formation and education goals. As will be the case for Lumen Christi, this model allows teachers and tutors to administer the curriculum instruction. While these guides are often certified teachers, they are not required to be.

Are students technically Homeschooled?

While each parent will be the main provider of their child’s education, Lumen Christ will be an unaccredited private Microschool. The curriculum we will be using will be unified and all accreditation and transcripts will be kept by that company.

Do I have to Teach or Volunteer?

While there will be opportunities to volunteer, all teaching and administrative components will be provided by Lumen Christi Academy staff. There will NOT be any requirements for parents to volunteer or teach.

What do we have to do on Fridays?

All required teaching and study will be designed to be completed during class hours Monday through Thursday. This will allow the students and their families to have tremendous freedom on Fridays and other days throughout the calendar year.

This freedom will also allow Lumen Christi, along with parents, to promote field trips and other activities that form the whole-person learning model we promote.

Why the four day schedule and shortened calendar?

Unlike other homeschool hybrids, we desire to promote a more private school like attitude. Our four day, multi-age classroom learning style is designed to allow parents to be the formators of their children, but not require them to be the full-time educator as well.

It is the goal of Lumen Christi that students are allowed to have unique learning opportunities not available to five day students. We also hope that this model will avoid parents and students feeling like they wear both hats of traditional hybrid programs where you are a student in class some days and then need to create a workspace at the kitchen table for other days.

Our school will start after Labor Day and conclude prior to Memorial Day! Let’s make Summers Great Again!

Is this for High Achievers or Average Students?

Both! That’s right both. Our robust, whole person education will challenge students to achieve. It will inspire vocational and educational discipline. The multi-age learning and student peer-to-peer mentoring will create an environment where wisdom and logic are attained.

However, we strongly refute the “sink or swim” mentality found in many private schools. If a student needs help, we will make efforts to support that student. We have also set our tuition based of the understanding that some students will benefit for additional tutoring or extra curricular activities.

Are outdoor activities available?

Yes! As our Academy will be based at Sanctus Ranch Retreat Center, our students will benefit from the peaceful and expansive property. Boasting of basketball, beach volleyball, gaga ball pit, horseshoes and acres of fields for soccer and football, Sanctus Ranch is uniquely positioned to offer a great outdoor experience.

In fact, many days our students will be found experiencing their Socratic discussion outside around the fire pit or under the large oak trees. Students will also have the opportunity to pray the outdoor Stations of the Cross, pray before Our Lady of Grace or the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and soon they will be able to experience the large living rosary to be built.
